  • Cracked Tooth Syndrome

At Totally Smiles, we are dedicated to helping our customers achieve the dental health and winning smile they deserve. We firmly believe that prevention and early detection are better than cure, so we encourage our customers to go for regular check-ups to increase the chances of detecting potential problems such as Cracked Tooth Syndrome.

    What is Cracked Tooth Syndrome?

Cracked Tooth Syndrome is when a tooth has a crack that is too small to be detected in an x-ray or under the gum, which makes it difficult to identify. It is more common in molars as these are the teeth that take the brunt of chewing.

How can I get Cracked Tooth Syndrome?

Cracking a tooth can happen in the blink of an eye or over a period of time. Potential causes include:

    • Chewing on hard foods such as candy, nuts, or ice
    • Daily wear and tear
    • Injury to the mouth
    • Teeth grinding
    • Large cavities or fillings
    • Previous root canal therapy

    What are the symptoms?

Aside from being challenging to detect, Cracked Tooth Syndrome exhibits symptoms that come and go, making it one of the most difficult dental issues to diagnose. Some of these are:

    • Sensitivity to hot and cold drinks
    • Pain when biting or chewing
    • Pain that is not constant
    • Gum infection

What can be done about it?

Because the symptoms come and go, it will be useful to note when these occur so that you can relay this information to our dedicated team, who may then recommend:

    • A filling to repair the tooth
    • A crown to protect the tooth
    • Root canal therapy if the pulp is damaged
    • An occlusal splint to reduce wear and tear caused by teeth grinding
    • Tooth extraction if the tooth cannot be saved

Treatment will depend on a few factors such as the location of the crack, how deep it is, and how large it is. We at Totally Smiles take a “no surprises” approach and our trustworthy team will always give you clear explanations about your options before drawing up a treatment plan suited to your unique needs.

  • Crowns

    Popular enquiry

At Totally Smiles, we care about maximum quality and offer the latest in dental crowns to give you a smile that is like new again.

    What is a dental crown?

A full coverage dental crown is one way of restoring a badly damaged tooth by protecting the entire structure of the tooth.

Our dental crowns look and feel like natural teeth. They are durable and strong and designed to last you for many years.

Why would I need a dental crown?

Sometimes a tooth can be damaged to the extent that its strength is compromised, such as when there is a large filling in the tooth. This can cause deflection and stresses on the remaining tooth structure as the filling expands and contracts due to biting forces.

If you have had a root canal treatment, this may lead to drying of the tooth because the nerve is removed. This causes the tooth to lose strength and become more brittle.

Another reason that your dentist may recommend a crown is when a tooth is fractured or cracked and you need a crown to hold it together and prevent further tooth loss.

A crown may also be your best option if you are unable to achieve the look you desire with other methods.

    Types of dental crowns

Dental crowns can be made of ceramic/porcelain, resin, gold, base metal alloys, and other materials. In some cases, a temporary crown is needed while waiting for the permanent crown. Computer-generated crowns are now also possible using CEREC technology, allowing you to have your crown in one visit.

We are proud of our dentists who are ethical and honest. You can rely on us to provide you with clear explanations about your options so that you can make informed decisions that are right for you and your oral health.

  • Dentures

    Popular enquiry

At Totally Smiles, we help you achieve the dental health and smile you want, no matter your stage in life.

We offer dentures as an option to customers who have lost natural teeth. More comfortable and natural-looking than ever, today’s dentures can give you back the confidence to smile, eat, and speak as before. Your comfort is our priority, and we’ll take the time to make sure that your new set of teeth feel right, look good, and work well.

    What are dentures?

Dentures are false teeth that are usually made from acrylic (or chrome for partial dentures) and replace missing teeth. They are designed to look like your natural teeth. They can be taken out for cleaning or when you sleep at night.

You can choose either full or partial dentures, depending on how many teeth need to be replaced.

    Why would I choose them?

If they are not replaced, missing teeth can change the shape of your face, making you look older than you really are. However, with the support given by your new set of teeth, you will retain a more youthful appearance and be able to enjoy your food and speak with as much ease as when you had your natural teeth. As a result, your confidence may improve and your ability to enjoy the company of others may increase too.

    Are dentures for me?

More natural-looking and more comfortable than ever, today’s false teeth are a great solution for customers who do not suit implants or a bridge to replace lost teeth, for whatever reason.

If most or all of your teeth are missing, a full denture may be for you. On the other hand, we may recommend a partial denture for those who still have some natural teeth remaining.

This can be a great option at any age, and there are not the same kinds of limitations with health and bone density that some customers may experience with other solutions such as implants.

Our trustworthy team are always on hand to provide advice to help you make informed decisions about your oral health.

  • Full Dentures

A Full Denture is made to replace all of your upper teeth, lower teeth or both when all the natural teeth are missing.

While it can be made to closely resemble your Natural teeth you may want to make changes to improve your smile.

  • Partial Dentures

A removable partial denture usually consists of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored plastic base, which is sometimes connected by metal framework that holds the denture in place in the mouth.

Partial dentures are used when one or more natural teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw. Not only does a partial denture fill in the spaces created by missing teeth, it prevents other teeth from changing position.

A precision partial denture is removable and has internal attachments rather than clasps that attach to the adjacent crowns. This is a more natural-looking appliance.

  • Sports Mouth Guards

Sporting accidents are one of the most common causes of dental injury. Every year thousands of people, including children, are treated for dental injuries that could have been avoided or minimised by wearing a protective, custom-fitted mouthguard. Damaged or knocked out teeth, broken jaws and cut lips can be sustained when playing sport. Wearing a custom-fitted mouthguard helps to absorb and spread the impact of a blow to your face, which might otherwise result in an injury to your mouth or jaw. Dental injuries can result in time off school or work to recover, can be painful and disfiguring, and may involve lengthy and complex dental treatment. The cost of an injury to your teeth or jaw far exceeds the cost of a custom-fitted mouthguard.

  • Soft Lining for Comfort

A temporary soft liner is placed in a new or old denture in order to:

    1. help improve the health of your gum tissues by absorbing some of the pressures of chewing (acts as a tissue conditioning material ) and;

    1. help determine the maximum retention possible by utilizing undercuts in the bone and gum which hard liners may not be able to negotiate without causing irritation.

Soft liners will spring around these undercuts and allow for greater retention than hard liners might be able to produce in the same mouth.

If we find that temporary soft liners provide enhanced retention, we will then be able to determine if we should replace them with a more permanent type of soft liner in the future or whether a hard liner is indicated.

  • Denture Repairs

No matter how well made your denture is, it is important to know that it is not immune to damage, accidents or breakage. In fact, your denture is not built to withstand sudden or sharp impact.

Should you drop it on the floor or accidentally knock it off your bedside table, your denture could quite easily chip, fracture or even break in half. If that happens, contact us for assistance.

Contact your local Totally Smiles practice to find out which dentures are suitable for you, or book an appointment online now.

  • Relines

Relining replaces the fitting surface of the denture, like re-treading a car tyre.

Dentures that fit well during the first few years will not necessarily fit due to changes in the mouth, such as medication, weight loss, age; and may require relines.

When dentures no longer fit well, the correct action is to seek follow-up care.

Adhesives may compensate for gradual loosening of a denture, but it is only a temporary solution; it does not solve the problem.

Relines should only be done once or twice due to anatomical changes but it is advised for the whole denture be replaced every 7 years.

Contact your local Totally Smiles practice to find out which dentures are suitable for you, or book an appointment online now.

  • Immediate Dentures

Unlike conventional dentures, immediate dentures are made in advance and can be positioned as soon as the teeth are removed.

As a result, the wearer does not have to be without teeth during the healing period.

However, bones and gums shrink over time, especially during the healing period following tooth removal. Therefore a disadvantage of immediate dentures compared with conventional dentures is that they require more adjustments to fit properly during the healing process, and generally should only be considered a temporary solution until conventional dentures can be made.

  • Cosmetic Dentures

A cosmetic denture is unique and individual in its construction. It can deliver results that are incredibly natural looking and so realistic that no-one will know you’re wearing it.

Advanced technology and our understanding of the natural morphology of each tooth, means we can construct teeth from scratch, as opposed to a standard pre-fabricated denture.

The level of detail we provide to each tooth means that it is unique in shape and colour. Such detailed construction also makes for a seamless result when constructing a partial denture. We’re able to match and blend your denture teeth with your existing natural teeth so well no one will pick the difference.

Cosmetic dentures can restore your natural look.

  • Chrome Dentures

Chrome Dentures are made from cast metal and considered of all the different types of denture to be the one most suited to being used as a permanent partial denture because it is one of the strongest available metals that does not irritate the mouth.

Unlike plastic partial dentures which are clipped onto the remaining teeth, the chrome cobalt partial denture actually rests on the teeth. The clasps ensure the denture remains firm and prevents any damage to your mouth’s soft tissue caused by up and down movement, rubbing or gum irritation.

The chrome partial denture is by far vastly superior to plastic partial dentures and your gums will stay healthier because the pressure of your bite and the chewing forces that you use when eating, is shared between the gums and any teeth which are remaining.

In some cases you may be able to have an open palate because with chrome dentures, there is less material covering the soft tissue in your mouth, this also allows you to taste better and improve detection of hot or cold temperatures which in turn, reduces the risk of scalding the mouth.

  • Dental Implants

At Totally Smiles, we use state-of-the-art technology that ensures we’re leading the way in dental care and comfort. We offer the most advanced dental solution for people wanting to replace their missing tooth or teeth — dental implants.

    What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a long-term solution for tooth or teeth replacement. They are made of biocompatible titanium and are inserted surgically so that it fuses with the jawbone. This process is called “osseointegration”. Like the roots of natural teeth, they provide a permanent anchor for replacement teeth, including crowns and bridges.

    When are dental implants used?

Dental implants may be an ideal solution for people who have lost one or more teeth due to tooth decay or injury. Candidates for implants should be in good general and oral health and have adequate bone in the jaw to support the implant.

    What are the benefits?

Implants provide a number of important cosmetic and functional benefits:

    • They are a permanent solution, providing teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth.
    • They do not slip, so there is no discomfort or embarrassment.
    • You can clean implants along with natural teeth.
    • Implants are strong enough to provide a reliable foundation for chewing.
    • They prevent bone loss and maintain the jawbone’s shape and density. This ensures the integrity of the facial structure and facial appearance.
    • Implants do not compromise the health of surrounding teeth, unlike traditional options such as bridges.

    Considerations

Implants may not be for everyone. If you have brittle, damaged jaw bones or bone loss and some general health issues, you may find that they are not the best solution for you.

We are proud of our dentists who are ethical and honest. You can rely on us to provide you with clear explanations about your options so that you can make informed decisions that are right for you and your oral health.

  • Extractions

    Emergency

It’s Totally Smiles mission to save teeth from damage. However, sometimes a tooth may need to be removed due to decay, extensive tooth cracks, disease, or poor positioning or functionality. Our dentists only perform extractions when restorative treatments aren’t enough to save a tooth. Tooth extractions can be completed in the dental chair using local anaesthetic.

Once a tooth has been removed, we will advise you of available options for replacing the lost tooth such as implants, fixed bridges or dentures.

For more information about tooth extraction or to make an appointment, contact your local Totally Smiles practice.

  • Fillings

Cavities (dental disease) caused by tooth decay require fillings to restore teeth to their normal shape, function and appearance.

Correctly cleaning your teeth and maintaining a healthy diet can help protect your teeth from cavities, as well as regular dental visits to ensure problems are identified and treated early.

For more information about fillings, contact your local Totally Smiles practice today, or book an appointment online now.

  • Inlays and Onlays

When a tooth has suffered from decay or a fracture, an inlay or onlay may be recommended to restore the tooth.

Similar to fillings, inlays and onlays take care of the cavity but also hold together the tooth, making it stronger and more durable. Inlays and onlays are made out of porcelain or composite materials and fit directly onto the tooth.

  • Mouth Rehabilitation

You deserve to be the best version of yourself. That is why at Totally Smiles, we offer a range of safe and pioneering dentistry services to help you achieve the dental health and smile you want, no matter your stage in life. One such service is mouth rehabilitation.

    What is mouth rehabilitation?

Mouth rehabilitation, restoration, or reconstruction all refer to the process of rebuilding all of the teeth in both upper and lower jaws. Such a need may arise due to:

    • Lost teeth resulting from decay, trauma, or injury
    • Severely worn down teeth as a result of acid erosion or teeth grinding
    • Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD)

    How does it work?

Our experienced dentists will conduct a comprehensive examination of your teeth, gums, and jaw to determine what needs to be fixed and the treatment options to correct them. This involves taking photographs and x-rays of your mouth, impressions of your teeth, and moulds of your teeth and bite.

We will also ask you about your overall health history including past dental issues, any medications you are taking, and any other illnesses you may have. All these may have an impact on your treatment plan so it is important to disclose them.

We will then develop a comprehensive rehabilitation plan that is fully customised for you. This may include several of these procedures:

    • Veneers, crowns, bridges, inlays, onlays, implants
    • Fillings
    • Root canal therapy
    • Orthodontics (braces, aligners, retainers)
    • Repositioning of the jaw
    • Contouring of gum tissue
    • Bone or soft tissue grafting

Procedures required will depend on each individual’s unique needs and circumstances. We at Totally Smiles take a “no surprises” approach and will always provide you with clear explanations about your rehabilitation plan, always ready to answer any questions you may have at any stage to assure you that you are in safe hands.

For more information about mouth rehabilitation, contact your local Totally Smiles practice today, or book an appointment online now.

  • Tooth Decay

Tooth decay occurs when a build-up of plaque and tartar leads to erosion of the tooth’s enamel (outer surface). This erosion causes tiny holes, which can be painful or cause sensitivity to hot or cold food and drinks.

To repair holes in the teeth, your dentist will remove any decaying enamel and fill the area with a composite resin (or filling). If decay has damaged the tooth’s pulp, root canal treatment and a crown may be needed to repair the tooth.

For more information on tooth decay and treatments, book an appointment with your local Totally Smiles practice.

  • Veneers

At Totally Smiles, we care about maximum quality and offer the latest in dental veneers to give you a smile that is like new again.

    What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers (also known as porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates) are wafer-thin shells made from either porcelain or a resin composite. They are bonded to the front surfaces of teeth to improve the appearance of tooth shape, colour, size, and alignment.

    When are dental veneers used?

Dental veneers can assist in creating a straight, symmetrical, white smile and are an ideal solution for people wanting to improve the appearance of:

    • teeth that are discoloured due to root canal treatment, stains from tetracycline or other drugs, excessive fluoride, or the presence of large resin fillings
    • worn down teeth
    • chipped or broken teeth
    • misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped teeth
    • teeth with unsightly gaps between them

What are the benefits of dental veneers?

Dental veneers offer cosmetic benefits to people wanting to improve the appearance of their teeth. They

    • offer dynamic colour variation and translucency that mimics the appearance of tooth enamel to create a natural-looking smile.
    • are made of biocompatible material that gum tissue usually tolerates well.
    • require minimal tooth shaping during the fitting procedure; approximately half a millimetre of enamel from the front of the tooth is removed.
    • can be fitted during a painless procedure and often without anaesthetic.
    • are stain-resistant.
    • do not require a separate or special cleaning routine.
    • can last up to 15 years, depending on the type of veneer selected and how well the veneers are maintained.
    • are often less expensive than other dental solutions for improving the appearance of teeth, such as dental crowns and orthodontic braces.

    Considerations

Veneers are not a good choice for individuals who clench and grind their teeth; have unhealthy, weakened teeth; or have an inadequate amount of existing enamel on the tooth surface.

  • T-Scan™ Dentistry

T-Scan™ is a digital bite analysis system that allows your dentist to determine if the way your upper and lower teeth come together is healthy and functional.

After undertaking the analysis, treatment can be prescribed to correct any problems with your bite.

T-Scan™ analysis and treatment can help reduce:

    • tooth wearing
    • tooth decay caused by wear
    • jaw pain.
